Sunlight & Silver
Vampires have always existed in the shadows and they have always traded in blood and fear. Early in the twenty first century, a devastating virus brought human civilization to its knees. Taking advantage of this, the vampires unite and take control of the devastated human population and reorder the world to their advantage. Mankind is reduced to serfdom on farm settlements ruled by their vampire lords with cruelty and intimidation. They are being bred like livestock to produce enough blood to feed their vampire Masters.
Even after five years, small groups of humans still evade domestication and fight to survive outside the new world order. The vampires and their human collaborators work diligently to round these renegades up and either bring them to heel or bleed them. A young man chosen to lead a small settlement struggles to hold on to his position while trying to reconcile the tradeoff between giving blood and the meager security provided by his new Masters. A young girl risks everything by escaping from the same settlement to aid a renegade blind man. Her motivations were more than altruistic as she was desperate to leave before she reached the age of breeding.
Months later, rumors circulate of a blind man who regained his sight and fights the vampires – at night. JACK KESSLER must overcome his reluctance to lead and rally the few remaining free humans to rise against the vampire lords armed only with the knowledge Kessler has gleaned from the disgruntled vampire architect of the new world order. The answer is simple and elemental: sunlight and silver.
It’s Stephen King’s Salem’s’ Lot meets The Stand and taps into the post-apocalyptic horror genre that has made The Walking Dead and The Strain popular. What makes this story stand out from the others in this provocative genre is that the vampires are so like humans; fiercely independent with different strengths and weaknesses. There are no magic bullets, collective consciousness or mind control. Killing the head vampire doesn’t reset anything except for who’s in charge.
